Frequently Asked Questions

These are, of course, questions we most expect to be asked, since we wrote the page before the app went live. We'll update it as questions come in. If you do have a question, please feel free to ask away.

Q. Can you electronically submit my return/VAT/etc?

A. No, our software doesn't do that.

Q. Can I add more than 1 admin account?

A. No, but we're looking at adding support for larger companies.

Q. Can I send my data to my accountant?

A. We're exploring options for exporting data, and we may add the option for an accountant's login, which would provide read-only access.

Q. Is it for IT contractors only?

A. Yes. If it works for another area, that's good, but our focus is IT contractors. Eventually, we might create sister-products for other industries/niches. If you think it could work for you with a few adjustments, get in touch and we'll see what we can do.

Q. Is it UK only?

A. Yes, currently there's no way to change currency, though that will be fixed by a future update (we realise that some contractors have clients in Europe and all over the world). The VAT section is UK specific, but the rest would probably work well enough for a contractor in another country.

Q. What's the history of this app/site?

A. I'm Adrian O'Connor and I have a small business called Arctus. I wrote this software in 2011. Like you, I'm an IT contractor in the UK, and I am fed up of messing about with spreadsheets and documents on my laptop every time I need to create an invoice or file my VAT return. I wrote this to make life better.

Q. How long have you been going? What assurances do you give?

A. Arctus has been established for 6 years. We won't shut the service down without personally contacting each and every customer and ensuring that you have your data made available in an alternative and useful format.

Q. What security measures do you have in place?

A. Everything is over SSL. Our servers run Linux, Ruby 1.9.2, Mysql 5.2 or Postgres 9 and Apache 2.2. They are fully patched and security updates are looked-for and applied nightly. We store your password as a SHA-1 hash, never in plain-text.
